JOB PLACEMENT

Marcia
Lenz '2000 writes...
As a parent and swim teacher, I have always valued
and appreciated the benefits of the aquatic environment for children as
a means for fitness while having fun. On my last affiliation as a Husson
physical therapy student, I was able to work with some of the children
on my case load, combining my
experience as a swimming instructor and my evolving clinical knowledge,
to provide therapy in the aquatic environment. As a therapist, I have
found the use of the aquatic environment the key to success for some of
my patients who otherwise may have difficulty moving against the effects
of gravity. The child in the photo is obviously having fun, and does not
mind when I make recommendations to her mother to progress her motor control
and activity, and provide suggestions for warm-up activities which will
help her organize herself and process all of the sensory information she
is receiving in this environment. At the end of this session, the child
was also better prepared to include some relaxation activities.

"PT: The Place to Be"
(From the 2004-2005 Occupational Outlook Handbook,
published by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics)
“Employment of physical therapists is expected to grow faster than
the average for all occupations through 2012,” the handbook states,
defining “faster than average” as an anticipated increase
in jobs of 21 percent to 35 percent between 2002 and 2012, compared to
an average overall job growth of 0 percent to 2 percent.” Check
out the entire article in PT Advance, April 26, 2004 edition.
The article goes on to outline a number of reasons for the expected growth
in jobs. One of many reasons quoted in the article is the growing elderly
population and increase in the number of individuals with disabilities
and/or limited function.

Tracey Euloth '2000 writes...
For me, it was
like winning the lottery. Finally, I had the opportunity to prove to myself
that I had what it takes to be a Physical Therapist.
Although relatively
young, Husson College's Physical Therapy program surpassed other institutions
in offering the most advanced curriculum and exposure to the field's most
current techniques and equipment. In my opinion, the program's ultimate
strength was in its internationally recognized faculty members. The exceptionally
knowledgeable and supportive faculty treated us as future colleagues,
not just as students.
I was an international
student at Husson College. I tell you this because I was given the opportunity
to transfer back to my home country to complete my PT education at a college
there. I chose to stay at Husson. I felt that I was receiving an education
unparalleled by other institutions. I believe that if you were to ask
my current employer, he would feel the same.
One dream came true…
One college made it possible…
Husson College.

There is life after PT school!
As you can see by the photo, Garrett Harthorne, class of 2000, is finding
there is life after physical therapy school.
Many students form life-long friendships
while pursuing their education. Garrett and Caroline are guests of Jason
Lobb (also class of 2000) as they visit in the beautiful mountains of
Utah. Two young men who were once partners in lab projects are now colleagues
in a profession where they are valued and held in high esteem. Garrett
and Caroline were two students struggling to learn anatomy together. Now
they are husband and wife, sharing a much loved profession.
Jen (Roberts)
Cowing, 2001 graduate writes...
As a practicing
therapist, with responsibilities in patient care and management, I feel
that the physical therapy program at Husson College did an outstanding
job of preparing me to excel in my profession. Both academically and clinically,
the wealth and diverse expertise offered by the faculty provide students
with a high quality of education. My education, particularly in the areas
of anatomy, manual therapy, research, and cardiopulmonary therapy rivals
that provided by nationally ranked programs. As a part of the Husson College
community for five years, I was able to acquire and develop leadership
and teamwork skills through my experiences on the student government,
as a member of a social service sorority, and in my work-study positions
on campus. I also benefited from advanced clinical electives, in-depth
anatomy reviews in my final year of professional education, and a program
content in research skills that will allow me to become a valuable contributor
to the body of knowledge of my profession in the future.
As faculty at a
small program, my professors were always available to me for assistance
as a student, and this availability has continued. Physical therapy faculty
members have continued to donate their time and share their knowledge
in serving as my mentors, research advisors, and colleagues for collaboration,
as I prepared my graduate reseach project for submission for presentation
at a national conference.
It is the trips
back to Husson for local physical therapy meetings or to work on a presentation
with a former professor that I look forward to the most. The welcoming
smiles and walks through my old labs make me even more humbly aware that
I am a part of a special place and program at Husson College.
Update: Since graduation
in May 2001, Jen has become Mrs. Chris Cowing and Mother to a beautiful
baby girl, Emma. She has also established her own PT practice.
WHAT ARE WE
HEARING FROM CLINICIANS?
"We want you
to know that we thoroughly enjoy the relationship between our facilty
and Husson College. We find your students and graduates to be well trained,
professional, and personable. As I'm sure you are well aware, we recently
hired two recent graduates of Husson. Both have exceptional clinical and
people skills. They are fitting well into our system." ...David
A. Nelson, PhD., Director of Rehab & Wellness Services, Millinocket
Regional Hospital.
"Exceptional, best
new grad ever encountered in 27 years!"
"I have worked
with graduates from many Physical Therapy schools nationwide. It is my
observation that Husson grads are far better educated and prepared for
their careers than those from any other school. We make Husson grads our
first choice when hiring Physical Therapists these days." ...Lauren
Hebert, PT,OSC www.smartcarept.com
"I am very
pleased with the caliber of Physical Therapists that Husson has graduated.
They were well prepared and able to jump into a very busy and active environment
and hit the road running. Both of the Husson PT graduates we have hired
have worked out very well for us." ...Alan Dunn OTR/L Aroostook
